For the Interstitial House project, I want to create an atmosphere which is comfortable for all. Therefore, have I placed the living room and kitchen together on the ground floor, the master bedroom and the bathroom are placed on the second floor, this is leaving the guest room to the third floor. The aim with this set-up is to have a house being social and open for guests, yet still have its privacy.

My focus was to design a house with an open plan allowing the inhabitants to view the different parts of the house at once. This creates a sensation of a larger space and the atmosphere is airy and light. I chose to use a mix of different natural materials to connect the inside and outside spaces. 3-dimensional structures made from wood, concrete and metal border the patio areas.

My main objective was to harvest as much natural light as possible into the small and narrow plot. Also, trying to give a clear indication of the various zones within the space without using internal walls. Maintaining a transient flow, specifically on the ground floor level. I chose to put a void space at the entrance that would emphasise the open space, and establish a private ‘haven’ from the busy city site.

Dealing with space in a constrained way was a challenge, but the project enabled us to consider the qualities that simple things like light hold. Within this project I played with raw materials such as stone and timber to translate their dense qualities into a space that is small and intimate. I felt it was important to convey depth and weightlessness through the natural lighting, which is why guests are welcomed by a full height void and skylight.

A small but comfortable home: This was a project about designing a house for two people. Levels of privacy and natural daylight are the major challenges of this project due to the special location of the site. Designing a comfortable atmosphere with practical function within the limited space was my main focus in this project. I focused on using natural materials and a muted palette to create a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. Similar materials but in different shades create a sense of variety inside a small house, but keep the entire design consistent. Open plan is one of my major design strategies. Under the restriction of the narrow shape of the site, I tried to keep the plan as simple as possible, visually creating a spacious sense within the interior.

Circulation and utilising the site was an important factor for me when designing this home. A consideration of how the users of this space would make a house a home and the hierarchy of their needs within this space. How the exterior of this site transitioned itself into the interior was a key in thinking about this process with it’s location and the building forms.

I drew influence from the site’s past - Glasgow’s Merchant City - as a trading hub and later a dilapidated neighbourhood when choosing the spaces materiality. My main aim was to create a flowing circulation which could be adapted to the dwellers, resulting in custom furniture. Large windows brighten the space without sacrificing privacy, whilst the interior was made to be inviting and personalised, so that this felt more like a home than a designed space.
